I have been lucky enough to spend my first two years of teaching living at home so I have been able to save up some money. While I have a little money to spend, I'm looking to outfit my kitchen with things I hopefully won't have to buy again for quite a while.
So far I have a nice set of stainless cookware, a couple pieces of non stick cookware, a below average set of knives, a nice cutting board, good utensils, measuring cups and spoons, and that's pretty much it.
One thing I'm looking to buy is a really nice Japanese knife. I've read tons about them and how they compare to European knives, and I've decided I can't live without one! Or at least I've convinced myself that I need to buy one :) If money weren't an issue, what one knife would you get? Also, what knife in the $300 and under range would you get?
Say you were starting with the things I have and somebody gave you $2000, what would you buy?
Also, I only live a couple hours from Chicago, so I don't mind going there if anybody has any ideas for places I could go to look for things.
