I purchased a piece of imported fresh Italian buffalo mozzarella today from a cheese shop in San Francisco. I took it home and do what I always do to enjoy food - I smelled it. It smelled slightly sour and I thought "uh oh." Then I tasted it, and it did have a tang to it, and it was also very salty.
Now, I haven't had fresh buffalo mozz. in a long time, but I NEVER remember it being tangy. Quite the opposite - I remember it being sweet and fresh-tasting.
I brought it back to the cheese shop, and the owner insisted that the cheese had not gone bad. He tasted it and said: "That's what buffalo tastes like."
Luckily, he gave me a refund without making a stink. But I still feel like I was right - the cheese had gone bad. Am I crazy?
