breakfast at Zazie

Windy | Jun 13, 200512:30 AM

Had a pleasant breakfast at Zazie this morning ahead of the Haight St Fair. We managed to arrive before the brunch crowds; the patio had a waiting list already, but indoors was empty and we snagged a choice window table. I hadn't been there in years, when I lived nearby. (In fact the last time I ate at Zazie, the main chef quit mid-meal and stormed out, and we all had to go home.) I gather the long-time manager has just bought the restaurant, and the food hasn't suffered if you order the right things.

We shared the omelette of the day (bacon, brie, and tomatoes), a scramble with mushrooms, fontina, and spinach, the Tahitian French toast, and the pancake of the day, made with oatmeal and topped with lemon curd and raspberries.

I thought the scramble was better than the omelette, which was too fluffy and not flavorful enough. The home fries were very good, accompanied by whole cloves of roasted garlic. We subsituted a cup of fruit salad on one order for relief from all that starch, but got three enormous slices of bread with each dish. It was a lot of food.

The best thing on the table was the oatmeal pancake, which bore no visible trace of oatmeal and remained airy even though it took us a while to get to it.

French toast was a hulking mess, served with fried bananas and some kind of peanut butter and whipped butter and syrup and caramel. It didn't taste any better than it sounds, except for the bananas.

Service was great--one of my friends lives around the corner and is a regular--although the food took a while and all came at once, which wasn't ideal since we shared everything. Tea was weak, and the coffee and tea cups felt like they came from a cafeteria. I didn't see the bill.
