Mari had mentioned a disappointing meal at Los Jarritos on South Van Ness recently, so thought I'd give a quick report on breakfast: We stopped in today ....and it was pretty much as I remember it from my last visit a year or so ago, which is to say, not great, but not bad either.
At 11 a.m. it was crowded: we grabbed the last two seats at the counter. Decent coffee and very good fresh squeezed OJ was brought immediately, along with their excellent chips, (fresh and warm) and salsa.
I debated whether to see if I could get the eggs fried in the huevos rancheros (it bugs me that they poach them, though I suppose it is a bit healthier)...but first asked about the chilaquiles with chicken: yes, they have eggs mixed in (which is not how I like them), but the guy behind the counter offered to make up a batch with no eggs. Yeah! Result: sauce was a little bland, but the salsa helped, the chicken was tasty, texture was ok. I'd give them a B, which is above where I rate the huevos.
I skipped the beans, the rice was flavorful. However, the accompanying tortillas were a major disappointment: fresh, but too thick for my taste, and absolutely no salt at all...hubby ate every bite of his huevos rancheros, but then he isn't as particular as I am as to how they should be made.
I couldn't finish my breakfast, but still am not hungry six hours later. Not sure if that is a plus or no. Total with two coffees, OJ, tax and tip: $26.
Driving north after breakfast to run errands, we passed a cute looking Mexican place in the 1800 block of Folsom, called Gallardo's. Can't find any mention of CH: has anyone been?
