Bravo for La Fusta!

I just returned from an absolutely wonderful dinner at La Fusta (my first time there in many years) and, although it was recommended here in response to a query a few days ago, I want to sing its praises. I frequent a whole array of Argentine and Uruguayan places in Jackson Heights and Corona, but this one has to be the best. The atmosphere is cozy; the waiters and owner are friendly and eager to please, and the food has some special touches that the others seem to lack. For roughly the same price, you get really fresh food prepared to order. We started with the eggplant appetizer which was nice, especially when accompanied by a chorizo and their very good bread. (Would have been even better with one of their red wines) Their chimichurri is even a bit tastier than others. We got a 1/2 entraña (skirt steak) and spinach canneloni a la Rossini (with red and white sauces). The skirt steak was just right, almost crusty on the outside and very juicy on the inside, but the canneloni were amazing. They mix ground chicken with the spinach to great effect, and the tomato sauce was a revelation, nothing from the can and a hint of ginger perhaps. You must try this dish. For dessert, our waiter gave us a combination of the quince and sweet potato jellies with cheese. And they have decaf expresso which we ordered 'cortado' (with just a hint of steamed milk). While we were there, I even saw the owner of La Nueva come in.

I must say that this was the best meal I've had in the boroughs in quite some time.

For those who haven't been, you can make reservations by calling 718-429-8222. They also have a website. It's located at 80-32 Baxter Ave. across from Elmhurst Hospital emergency entrance, a block from Broadway.
