Why is Boston food so bland?

MLouis | Aug 11, 2015 09:58 AM

I recently moved to Boston from the mid-Atlantic, and am struck by how bland the food is here. I live in Brookline, and keep trying highly rated restaurants (according to Yelp) and have been disappointed every time. Chilacates, Mei Mei, Brothers are the stand-outs (in terms of the gap between their ratings, and my experience), but I wonder if the problem is that people here actually prefer their food to be tasteless.

Has anyone else had this issue? Are there places you would recommend (New American, Mexican, etc.) where the food is more palatable to Southern tastes? For those who are from here, and have spent time in the South, does the food there taste over-spiced and salty?

Maybe I've grown pickier as I've aged, but I've lived all over the U.S., and this is the first place where the restaurants are both over-priced (like everything else here) and bland.

Chilacates,
Mei Mei
