Borough Market - Downhill

Simon Majumdar | Mar 4, 200203:31 AM     21

As many people know, if they have read any of the posts on this board, I am a huge fan of Borough Market, but it would appear that it is becoming a victim of its own success.

I had not been for a month or so, but wanted to pick up some stuff at The Ginger Pig. I got there at 9.15 ( hardly in the heat of the midday sun ) and the place was packed, primarily it seemed with people pushing baby strollers. It was almost impossible to get to any of the worthwhile stands and the queue at the Neals Yard branch was out the door. A truly horrible experience

I think if you had stood in the middle and shouted "Felicity" or "Sebastian" you would get crushed in the stampede and for the first time I saw groups of tourists following someone brandishing an umbrella!! I know this is on the tourist trail and a good thing too, it is one of the glories of London ( or was ) but coach parties?

I know there is talk of relocating the market to Spitalfields once it is restored. I think this would be a very good idea, giving the market more space and me ( I am nothing if not selfish) a shorter walk
