Borinquen 1 or 2, is there a difference?

Cathy2 | Nov 18, 200310:12 AM

Last night I went to Borinquen 2. If we had eaten only the Jibarito, I think we would have come away with a better impression. I ordered one Jibarito (there were 3 of us, my niece and a friend) plus 2 mofongo, pastelles (banana meat pie), fried sweet plantain, pastelillos (meat puff), relleno de papa (potato dumpling), some fried fish, ect. Plus a last minute BBQ pork on a stick.

The pork on a stick was dry and so hard my friend wouldn't even take a nibble fearing it may break her teeth. The mofungo seemed like a dry matzoball with a chicken soup dipping sauce. I had seen photos on the internet of mofungo which looked flaky tender with small cubes of fried fatty pork. My friend had returned recently from Puerto Rico where she loved the mofungo ... she took one nibble and declared it wasn't like any other Mofungo she ever had (not a compliment). I was trying to gamely try everything and remind myself it is a different culture ... but after a while I just began to wonder if this was badly executed food and/or I came during the wrong shift.

What was liked the most was the Jibarito, but it was still dry and didn't have the greasy goodness right off the grill Seth described (admittedly, he was at the California location, not Central AVenue). The fried sweet plantain was history very fast. The banana and potato dumplings were deemed passable.

I have several other Puerto Rican restaurants to visit in the near future. I chose Borinquen 2 first because of the reputation for Jibaritos. I guess I want someone to tell me I just hit things on a bad night and there is much to look forward to.
