Reading all the hype about BonChon, I decided to check it out yesterday.
THE GOOD: The food is, indeed, wonderful. The drumsticks and wings are huge, crispy and deliciously seasoned. The Garlic Soy flavoring is a bit sweet for my taste, heavier on soy than garlic, btw. Much better is the Spicy flavoring -- akin to a Buffalo Wing flavoring, but much more subtle and complex.
THE BAD: Parking is problematic, as is the 30 minute wait for food (this had nothing to do with volume -- the restaurant was empty). I'd recommend doing take-out instead of eating in, as the restaurant has zero ambience and the wait staff is indifferent and inattentive while you wait.
THE UGLY: Without question, BonChon has the rudest management I've ever come across in Los Angeles. Not realizing just how big the drums and wings were, my party ordered two large orders, instead of two mediums. Consequently, we had about 8 pieces of chicken left over. When I asked for a to-go container, they brought me a tiny styrofoam box that could hold, at best, 2 pieces. When I explained that this wasn't big enough and asked for one of their take-out containers, the manager told me they were "for customers only." Keep in mind that my party had already spent $40+ at their establishment (2 large orders of chicken, drinks and sides). Begrudgingly, they finally gave me a cardboard folding box. When I asked for a bag as well, again they told me they were "for customers only" (never mind that they had 20+ empty bags lined up on the counter waiting to be filled for to-go orders). Unbeliavable. I wondered if the shoddy service and treatment had something to do with the fact that I wasn't Korean -- a Korean couple that came to the restaurant and ordered 15 minutes after us got their food 10 minutes before we did -- but I'm not going to jump to conclusions. Regardless, the franchisees of this particular location are so incredibly rude and disrepsectful that I shall never return, no matter how good their chicken may or may not be.
