Bogie's Hoagies in Hawthorne

I'm starting to really dig Hawthorne's downtown shopping area along Lafayette Avenue. Not only are there some really cool shops and restaurants there, but there is less traffic and more parking than in the downtowns of fancier places, like Westwood or Ridgewood.

A few days ago, I discovered Bogie's Hoagies. And boy oh boy, I am now hooked. The place is fairly modest looking inside and out. But looks can be deceiving. This place puts out some of the best sandwiches I have ever had. They are also huge and very reasonably priced.

Their whole subs are 14", and they must be 4" - 5" wide. They are also stuffed with meat and toppings. Most are in the $9 range. If that's too much, the half subs are 7" and in the $4.50 - $5.00 range, and because they're so wide and packed with stuff, they contain more food than a typical 9" or 10" sub from another place, which would probably charge you $7 for a half sandwich and $12 or $13 for a whole one.

Yesterday, I got what may have been the best chicken parm sandwich I ever had. For $10, I got a sandwich stuffed with about five fresh chicken cutlets breaded in panko, fresh sauce, and homemade mozzarella. I had lunch yesterday from it, and I'm going to have dinner tonight from it.

They also have a FANTASTIC penne in vodka sauce dish with the aforementioned chicken cut into strips. Now I'm funny with vodka sauce. When it's made well, it's great. When it's made poorly, which is more often the case, it's a lousy mess of odd-tasting tomato and cream. This is vodka sauce done right. The penne is freshly made, along with the chicken and the sauce. How much for this large portion of fancy food? $20? $14? Nope. $8. Heck, a Big Mac costs almost that much today.

The owner/chef is supposedly a CIA graduate (the one where they chop instead of shoot), and it shows in the quality of his food. The staff there is also super friendly, and there is plenty of room to eat in if you want.
