bld brunch reports - long

I had brunch at bld two weekends in a row. I like the ambience and the service. The room is modern but still warm. The hostess and wait staff are very friendly - no attitude like at some other places.

The first time my friend and I went at 10:30 am on a Saturday. We waited for less than 5 minutes. We split the blueberry ricotta pancakes and the vegetable frittata. We chose the fingerling potatoes and the brioche with the frittata. The pancakes were delicious. I would go back just for those. The frittata was also very good, though a bit on the oily side. The potatoes were done well, and the brioche was good as well. The bill came to $30 (also including coffee for my friend). There was a $3.50 or $4.50 valet charge (I can't remember), which was a bit annoying, but there was no street parking. Not that it's relevant, but for those who care, Kate Winslet was there.

The second time I went with three others on a Friday at about 11 am. It wasn't even a third full, so there was no wait. I had the wild mushroom omelette with french fries and a sour cream and chives biscuit. I liked the frittata better than the omelette. Also the goat cheese wasn't evenly distributed, so some bites didn't taste as good as others, and then some bites were just too cheesy. The french fries were the skinny kind. They were good, nothing great, but not bad either. The biscuit was good, but not as good as I expected. I'm not sure why I expected to like it more, but I did. Maybe because it sounds kind of decadent. One of my companions had the eggs florentine with french fries and the biscuit. She liked the fact that the florentine was baked in its own little dish. I had a bite of her eggs and they were good. Another companion had the Ode to Butterfield's and the fingerling potatoes. I didn't get to try his, but he must have liked it since he practically licked his plate clean. My husband had the eggs benedict and the chorizo and lomo home fries. He thought the home fries were a bit too salty, and he likes salty food. And he thought the eggs benedict were just average. My husband isn't picky about food at all. My companions all enjoyed the coffee - they all remarked that it was pretty strong, in a good way. I don't know what the bill was because one of my companions paid.

All in all, I like bld as a brunch place. It's a nice place to take out-of-town guests. And it's very convenient for us, location-wise. I've learned that I prefer the frittata to the omelette and that I like the fingerling potatoes the best out of the potato choices. We were very tempted to try some cheese, but we'll have to wait until next time. Plus, we'll have to give lunch and dinner a try sometime. And those pancakes again - yum!
