What do bitter almonds look like?

Miss Needle | Jun 19, 201301:59 PM     10

I purchased some raw almonds from a bulk bin about 2-3 weeks ago. I haven't eaten them until today. I ate a few and it was delicious -- very strong almond flavor. They were from Spain, if that makes a difference. I then had a couple of really bitter ones. As I'm not shy about bitterness I continued to eat a few more. My tongue then doubled in size and I felt light-headed. Feelings persisted until I made myself vomit.

I googled bitter almonds and found out how they are illegal in the US because they contain cyanide in raw form. I tried to do an image search for bitter almonds but couldn't come up with anything definitive as I think a lot of people just used stock pictures for almonds. Some of the almonds I have are squat and flat, very different than what I know almonds to be.

So for those of you who have actually seen bitter almonds, do they look different than regular ones? If yes, how so?
