Had a bad meal at Bistro Campagne last night, and I hereby recind my recent recommendation of it. The place has been up and down for as long as it's been open, with long periods of "up" interspersed by shorter periods of "down," but last night's meal was extremely disappointing. The cold salmon appetizer was good (though nothing remarkable), but the Prawns Provencale were unpleasant. Though the sauce was tasty, the shrimp were raw in part. There are a lot of things I like raw, but shrimp is not one of them. Nor was this deliberate (it was a hot dish) - the shrimp were very large, and portions that were curled under were raw. Ugh.
Then I was served a pork chop that was so tough and gristly I could barely cut it. I sent it back and got a quite servicable Croque Monsieur. Meanwhile, my husband had the calf's liver - which he said was okay. We were comped the dessert (Chocolate Pot au Creme), so that was nice. But the new menu is bland - as if they're sticking to the standards because the new chef can't do anything more adventuresome.
We'll give the place a pass for now, and try them again in a few months or so.
