We were down in Aventura this weekend for Mother's Day and my husband had a Bissaleh craving. This is a dairy kosher restaurant on Collins and 176th that has the most delicious savory Yemenite pastries.
It was just as delicious as we remembered. Their specialty, named for the restaurant, is the buttery, flaky Yementie pastry dough filled w/ a cheese mixture (e.g., cheese & spinach, cheese & olives) and coiled, then baked in their wood-burning oven. It's served with a tomato-based sauce that has an island of spicy green sauce in the center and is delicious. It's also served with a hard-boiled egg, carrot salad and spicy cabbage salad. And it's so filling it can feed two people. They also have burekas (potato-filled are excellent), malewach and lots of other savory pastry delicacies, plus fish, many salads, the ubiquitous meditteranean sampler, etc. All are good.
Bissaleh also offers many fresh juice combinations to drink with their food, including a very refreshing mint lemonade. The fresh mint crushed in the icy lemonade is an amazing addition, adn it's so refreshing to drink in this hot weather.
