Corned beef sandwiches are one of my favorite foods. I've only been here for 2 and a half years, but I've had at least a dozen, amny of them more than twice. And after repeated testing, I am now definiteively judging Billy's in Glendale to be my favorite. Perfect medium thickness of slices, inbetween The Hat and Langer's, and a monster full of meat.
In fact, since I was cursed to work in the dining wasteland of a community known as La Canada, one day I bought a Billy's sandwich, and, while eating the first half, cruised back up towards work, and stopped by Berge's sandwiches on foothill Blvd. I brought the second half of my Billy's sandwich in and showed the people behind the counter and the customers what a sandwich should look like. Yes, it was awkward. Yes, I enjoyed every moment of it. Yes, it was me acting out in frustration at the impossibility of a decent lunch near my workplace. I hope, somewhere - in the heart of one of the youngsters sitting at a table perhaps - a lesson was ingested about what should and should not be settled for in this world. The thoroughly mediocre and personality-less sandwiches at Berges are simply unacceptable.
when I left Berge's I felt so wonderful I went to another rotten sandwich-making place, and did the same thing. This victim was the La canada food imports, sandwiches and pizza place a little further west on Foothill. Needless to say, the folks behind the counter were none too pleased. Surely it must have been because, again, it was awkward, but also - their sandwiches have a total meat weight of perhaps 70 grams. I am not kidding. (I tried them twice just to make sure: two or three thin slices of meat folded in waves to impersonate depth.)
So I say Billy's wins (my heart). Are there any other contenders? (Langers, Canters, Tam O' Shanters, and any of the santa monica 'pubs' have been disqualified due to previous tastlings.)
