Berlin recommendations? [Split from Donor Kebab thread on the Manhattan board]

Bada Bing | Jan 3, 201508:32 AM     6

I'll revive this thread with a special hope of having linguafood's Berlin thoughts, in addition to the input of any others in the know. I might finally be able to schedule a trip to Berlin, either in April or June, for a week or more. I spent a whole summer in Berlin in 1987 and know the former West Berlin layout pretty well. Lived in Charlottenburg on Tauroggener Strasse near the palace. Now that Berlin is unified, I am uncertain what the best hotel location might be. Is former East Berlin now a place to stay? Some top hotels are there, apparently.

Further info. is that I'll probably have my 15-year-old son along, and our main interests are museums and historical sites, along with Döner Kebabs, German foods and other Chowish adventures. We don't require a luxury hotel, but in April the deals look good. From my time in Berlin, I think a key consideration is ready access to the U-Bahn (which I loved for West Berlin but only once used to enter former East Berlin).
