Beef n Tater Hot Dish Recipe?

My presence, along with my favorite "hot dish", has been requested for a party in San Francisco next week. While a frequent visitor to Minnesota in years past, I didn't really get much exposure to this food genre. I found the recipe linked below on Byerly's website. The tater tot aspect attracts me and I think I might make this for the party. I'd appreciate suggestions on how to tweak the recipe to give it the most authentic taste. Three cans of soup seems like a lot to add. And, what should I use for "browning and seasoning sauce"?
