Yesterday I took myself to my semi-annual hey,-I'm-on-vacation hamburger lunch at Peter Luger. I've done this a number of times in the past having noted the suggestions of other knowledgeable chowhounders. Last time I did notice that the burger was not what it was the time before but I chalked it up to the vageries of life?meat?me?, who knows? Yesterday however was a decidely different kettle of chopped meat. I ordered my burger medium with cheese. It came medium rare. I wasn't thrilled but I could live with it. I put about a teaspoonful of ketchup on the burger, one ring from the onion that was lounging on the other side of the bun and took a bite. Nothing. I mean no beefy flavor. Actually no flavor at all from the burger. I tasted the cheese, the ketchup and a twinge of onion. No beef. One might be tempted to think that a medium rare burger would exude some juices. Not this baby. It wasn't that it was dry. It just wasn't juicy. I didn't finish the burger or the fries (although they were fine I guess I was just simply too bereft). I suppose this little critique constitutes a downhill alert but I'd certainly like to hear from others who stand by the Peter Luger burger experience. Me? I'll take Bonnie's spicy hamburger any time.
