We tried Beckett's Table last night, after seeing good crowds there following their opening on Wednesday night. The space has been remodeled nicely since the changove from That's Italiano! which is unmissed in the location on 36th And Indian School. Decor is modern, with lots of wood and exposed brick, but warm and inviting for a large room.
The crowd was solid and with no reservation at 7:30 on Saturday night there was a 15 min wait for dining room, but no wait at the 15 seat bar or a beautiful polished wood common table just next to the bar. We grabbed two seats at the bar and fired up gin and tomics and a nice Sangiovese.
Menu is tight with only 8-10 entrees, a few salads and soups, and a large handful of appetizers. Straight up comfort food with lots of fresh and local ingredients. The waiter said they will be adding specials in a blue plate style after they get settled.
We started with the Butter lettuce salad, which had a nice vinagrette and carmelized onions which balanced well and was very tasty. Also had the mac n' Cheese side as an app which was equally well prepared with a bechamel style sauce that was creamy without being too rich. Both very nice and would have made a nice light meal for one if ordered together.
For dinner we went with the beef bourginone shepard's pie and pork green chili stew. Both were great, well seasoned, good cuts of chunky beek or pork, lots of flavor and a good amount of kick. The only thing I would change, is the meat hadn't quite reached "falling apart" texture. This was a minor issue and overall the dishes worked very well. Corn bread on the side was moist and sweet and heavenly.
Desserts were offered for free as the entrees came out a little slow, which we didn't notice, but the service staff was almost too apologetic, lot's of checking in to see how things were and getting feedback on the menu. We had a bread pudding and a chocolate mousse cake, both of which were good, but could have used a little more sauce.
Overall, great place and will be going back. Service is friendly and bordering on overly helpful. We got out at $75 before tip for 2 apps, entrees, and drinks, though the desserts were comped. If you like Tarbells, Eddies, etc flavorful comfort food with bolder flavors, I think you'll enjoy it.
