Beach recommendation: Star of Kingston

A snowy Monday night and it's my husband's turn to make dinner. He used his favourite kitchen tool: the phone.

Tonight, he ordered from the Star of Kingston (Kingston Road and Waverley). I had the Salciccia pasta (spaghettini with hot Italian sausage, sundried tomato pesto cream sauce) and he had the Pancetta pizza (smoked bacon, wild mushroom, mozzarella and pesto tomato sauce). Both were delicious. Price point brought a smile to a Scotsman's face: only $22 plus tip.

The pizza is an 11-inch gourmet crust. This means thin, so it really is much better if you eat in. However, it travelled fairly well tonight (probably because the driver's been here before), stayed nice and crisp and tasty. The pasta in a rich creamy sauce is excellent and generous -- enough left over for tomorrow's lunch. I can almost forgive them for substituting spaghetti for the spaghettini.

I know the Star of Kingston looks like a fish and chip shop (btw fish & chips are also excellent), but it's one of those things... Young immigrant couple (husband is Italian-trained chef) bought a business. They would like nothing more than to offer Italian food, but were wise enough not alienate the customers of the previous business.

It's a small, little uncharming place to eat in, and young adolescent boys drop in frequently to fuel with french fries, hamburgers and pop. The ambiance is definitely lacking. There's room for about 10 people, and you might end up sitting beside the owner's son while he does his homework.

For good food at a decent price, please do give them a try. Free delivery and they're open on Mondays!

If we keep them open, maybe someday they can open their dream Italian place.
