Bay Fung Tong Oakland, downhill, except maybe (emphasis on the maybe) the won ton soup...

Just catching up on my Chow News, and just noticed this inquiry from Melanie, see link below, about whether Bay Fung Tong in Oakland has gone seriously downhill. The answer, I am sorry to report (particularly since it is very close to my office!) is, sadly, yes. The quality and freshness of seafood just isn't what is used to be; everything is increasingly gloppy.

That said, there just isn't much very close to our office, and a colleague dragged me there the other day when it was cold, rainy, and she didn't feel like walking far. I had a decent meal by sticking to soup: the house special won ton soup is still pretty good: loaded with seafood and bbq pork, and the calamari was surprisngly tender. However, it still isn't anything fabulous (just the best alternative if one doesn't want to walk down to Chinatown 8 or so blocks away), particularly since the broth has more salt than real flavor. There were a generous number of wontons but they had less assertive pork flavor than I remember.

I certainly wouldn't consider it a destination for dinner any more...
