I am usually very sketchy of Italian food out here on Long Island; I usually find it way too Americanized (I like Italian-Italian food). So it was a pleasant surprise to find this really nice, if small, brand new Italian Deli called Baudalato's on 25 (Middle Country road) and 97 (Nicoll's Road). They make all their own meatballs and sausage fresh; I find the meatballs outstanding, considering I don't even like meatballs. The sandwiches hinge on that American/Italian flavor, but leans just enough toward the Italian side of things to be pretty good. And all of their prepared foods, from Apple-raisin coleslaw to riceballs, are excellent. (except for the crabcakes; not a big fan of imitation crabmeat). Service is excellent and I will definitely be buying all my sausages from there from now on.
I don't have the exact address (and I may have spelled the name wrong) but get off the LIE at Exit 62 and head North on 97 (Nicoll's rd) to Stony brook. Get off at 25 (Middle Country Rd) and take the turn heading toward Riverhead. It's less than 5 minutes down the road on your left. If you past Starbucks or Home Depot on the left, you've gone too far.
