After a lovely long weekend, I can confirm that Abac and El Raco d'en Freixa are top form restaurants. Abac was delicious with amuse-bouches of shrimp/celery/puree (that was my favorite dish of the night) and a wonderful mushroom soup. My husband's favorite was an appetizer of a crab concoction with avocado/mint sorbet on top. Wonderful cheese cart including rarities such as afuega'l pitu and tupi. El Raco was terrific after the sommelier and I negotiated a wine choice. He nixed my choice and his choice (curiously 2 1/2 times higher in price) of a gran reserva Rioja was a wine that is not one of my favorites and I think past it's prime. His following suggestions were approaching the 90 Euro mark and not until I mentioned that I thought we could drink much more reasonably in Spain with wonderful wine and plenty of choices did he back down. The meal, and the wine were great.
Found a wonderful little restaurant in the tourist area around the Royal Palace on the little street that heads out of the plaza, kind of to the north, parallel to La Rambla called La Crema Canela. Beautiful inside, reasonable prices and good food. Sure seemed to beat the other available choices in the immediate area.
