I spent the last several days trying barbecue from a bunch of places around NJ (week off activity) and here are some comments. For most of them, it was the only time I've been, so take them with a grain of salt. I'd be interested to hear other experiences or suggestions.

Hickory Hog:
Best ribs I've had in NJ. Perfect texture - pull apart tender but still moist - and killer sauce. Tangy and assertive, not just sweet KC style. The cajun style dry were good too, but I think a little goes a long way with them. I'll be going back for a follow up.

Georgie Porgie:
Good flavor in the ribs but a little too chewy for me. Good pulled pork and brisket.

Lake Side Deli (Rt 31):
They were out of ribs, but the brisket (sauced and combined with onions) was a pleasant surprise.

Grub Hut/Baja B Que:
Always at least decent, but the texture is sometimes good and sometimes chewy. Sauces are ok but don't jump out at you, same as most other places.

Ol West:
Pretty solid. Two types of beef ribs, which is pretty rare. Didn't like the slaw.

Memphis Pig Out:
Better than I expected, considering some of the reviews. Comparable to the other places but in a slightly different style.

Local Smoke:
Excellent across the board. Best pulled pork (carolina sauce). Great brisket.

Jersey Shore:

Mo Green's:
Great brisket flavor but very chewy. I didn't mind. Everything else was very good.

Texas Smoke:
I must have been on a bad day. The pulled pork was too dry to eat.

Famous Dave's:
The food is ok, but the overall experience is too Bennigan's for me. At least they have multiple sauce choices.

Big Ed's:
Too much sauce, meat too soft. Not bad if you know what you're getting, but probably shouldn't be on a barbecue list.

Pom Pom:
I liked the ribs and sides, I wish they had more choices.
