I distinctly remember my first banh mi and how it made me swoon. Subsequent versions confirmed how basically delicious this foodstuff is. Over the years, though, as much as I relish banh mi, it's becoming harder and harder to excite me in that same way.
Until now. I followed a rec from Don Rockwell, and the banh mi at Banh Ta in Eden Center made me feel like the very first time. There is nothing in this area that comes close. There is no second best.
I tried two versions: a special sardine banh mi and a lemongrass pork banh mi. The sardine version came with a red spicy sauce. The sandwich was dripping and delicious, and very filling. Later that day, I tried the lemongrass pork, though it tasted more like lemongrass steak. Really good steak, so soft and supple.
The bread here is extraordinary. Very filling yet still so easy to eat.
Banh Ta is located a couple of doors down from Thanh Son Tofu. It has elegant decor, and more importantly, two seats at a counter in back so you can eat inside. How perfect is that?
