Have been trying various versions of banh mi this summer - have only tried 2 places so far.
Vietnam Banh Mi So 1 - I have been focusing on the pate (#7). I've been ordering it with extra pate and peppers, with hot sauce, without hot sauce, etc. Still trying to find that right mix. Their pate is very good - nice melding of flavours. Like that they use serranos - they have a certain taste that is unique. I like the special also - #1. Have not tried the meatball yet. Those funky oddly colored jellied drinks are enjoyable. Their ice coffee is fine.
An Dong - take the N train to 8th ave walk about 5 blocks down. Ordered a pate banh mi - spicy, no extras. With the first bite I noticed was how perfectly toasted the bread was. Nice balance of ingredients. The toasting seemed to have melded the flavours. Not sure what type of pepper they use - defintely not jalepeno or serrano - a bit of heat. Wish I had ordered two. I can see why chowhounds have praised this place. Will defintely be making the trek to try more versions. Tried their ice coffee - good.
