I know this place has a lot of defenders, friends of mine (though not food people, necessarily) rave about the brunch, and I've had very good dinners at sister restaurant Cafe LuLucbut the brunch I had there this weekend was really awful. Three of us ordered the scrambled eggs with "gulf shrimp" and two orders of the banana and walnut pancakes. Orange juice came from a can with lots of ice in the glass to try to fill it up and water down the taste. The pastry basket is nice, but obviously recycled from table to table. Coffee refills had to be forcibly extracted from a distracted wait staff. The pancakes were leaden and bland but far better than the eggs. The "gulf shrimp" were those tiny, white, almost-translucent mini shrimp that come in big frozen packages, thawed and thrown into the scrambled eggs, which were tasteless and overcooked with a hard yellow crust. The home fries were soft and tasted of tin. Looked like everyone else was ordering the eggs Benedict, but after reading Kitchen Confidential, that's one brunch dish I stay away from, thank you. The one positive thing I can say is, it was cheap. I can't understand the long lines outside this place on weekend mornings. The bar for brunch seems to be set very, very low. Is there any reasonably priced place that actually makes a properly cooked omelet or egg?
