Recommended on this board, I finally got over there Friday night.
Small, (I think I counted 64 seats in a space that would comfortably support half that many), bustling, (four waiters and a hostess), busy, (sign up sheet outside the door), and delicious, two appetizers and two entrees. (And before I forget, iced tea was $1 glass/free refills - how long has it been...?)
We started out with the roti bread appetizer and it was just awesome. They serve it with a small ramekin of curry sauce which was okay, but nothing special. The bread was amazing. Cooked to order it's like a fluffier, lighter flour tortilla. Really good and really hot. We also had the chicken satay which was really good as well.
For entrees, we had a chicken dish which was a half a roasted, bone-in chicken cleavered into slices with a basil-ly sauce...
...and beef rendang. The chicken was great. The rendang was good, but I think I liked both the satay and rendang better at Rice Bowl. I am not familiar enough with the cuisine to know if those were true Malay dishes or a Malay take on traditional Indonesian dishes. Either way, they were very good, and I can truthfully recommend them.
The place is tough to find. It's in the very back of a vast shopping center directly across Bellaire from Sinh Sinh. I will definitely be going back.
It is "My Kinda Place".
Thanks for the recc.
