Ban on Canadian beef exports, Mennonite Summer Sausage...

A quick note to anyone ordering any sort of mail order meat from Canada, apparently there’s a ban in effect till March on exporting beef-products.

I had read a few months back in an issue of Saveur Magazine about this artisanal summer sausage made by Mennonites in Ontario that was supposed to be the best on the planet. My father is a summer sausage fiend and specifically stated he only wants food as gifts from here on out awhile back. Loving son that I am, I tried ordering this stuff for him from Pan Chancho bakery in Kingston (where it’s available per the article) back in August for his birthday. They told me then it was on backorder and wouldn’t ship till December so it necessarily became a Christmas present. At the time I asked about shipping meat and they said they haven’t had any problems lately. I was, however, encouraged that this sausage was so popular that the Mennonites couldn’t jam it into casings fast enough.

Well Christmas comes and goes and about a week ago my family gets a letter from customs saying it was held up at the border for fear of Mad Cow disease. I call the place in Ontario and I guess the ban is in effect because of suspected mad cow in Alberta.

I asked for a refund for the time being but may re-order in March. I’ve got high hopes for this stuff.
