yesterday 3 country bumpkins from the berkshires ventured into NYC for a show & dinner.
my 2 sisters & i saw the matinee of the color purple and then took a cab down to BALTHAZAR.
we had 5:30pm res, and arrived at 5:20pm. when we got there, the bar was busy and the waiting area was too, but the dining room was empty and i was confused until our host told us she would begin seating at 5:30. we were sat promptly at 5:30, and so were many other people and before you knew it the restaurant was full.
our server was REALLY good, except his accent was so thick, there were 2 times i couldnt understand him ( ill explain later )
for appetizer i had the lobster rissoto which was rich and creamy and DELICIOUSSSSSS. one sister had the escargot and the other lobster bisque. we all loved it.
for dinner...this is where one of the "accent" times were hard. i saw 2 different steaks on the menu: balthazar steak & steak frites. the 1st was $22 and the 2nd was $29. i asked our server what they were, and i could only understand the balthazar steak was a flank steak. i couldnt understand what he was saying about the 2nd steak, but i figured it was more $ it had to be good...so i ordered it. it was TASTY. had it med-rare with bernaise and it melted in my mouth. very very flavorful and cooked perfectly.
one sister had the salmon and she loved it, i made my other sister order the skate because none of us had tried it and i had seen rec's from chowhound. it was really good. tasted like scallops...?
for dessert we ordered the chocolate cake with white chocolate ice cream and the baked meringue ( sp? ) with berries. WONDERFUL. both desserts were sooooo good.
all that food, a few cocktails, one carafe of wine, coffee, tax + big tip=$245
so glad we went there. loved the atmosphere, nice and lively and the food was very tasty and the service was really good. oh- the 2nd thing i was confused about was we saw stone crab in that beautiful seafood case and we asked about them and our server said
( i think he said...? ) they did NOT have them....we were almost positive they were stone crab though...? does anyone know?
cannot wait to come back to the city for another show & dinner!
