Do you bake star-shaped cookies? Please help me!

Does anyone have a great recipe for a basic sugar cookie? Better yet, I'd like to get a shortbread-like cookie with a strong lemon zing.

I've been wanting to make either sugar or lemon cookies coated in a zingy lemon glaze, but:

The times I've tried to bake cookies with my star-shaped cookie cutter, the tips bake way more quickly than the rest of the cookie. The result is burnt points on all the stars.

Does anyone else have this problem? What can I do?

Caveat: I'm fairly adept in the kitchen, but seem to be horrible at making cookies. As far as I can figure, I need to force myself to take the cookies out when they seem soft and raw to me. Then, as they cool, they firm up. Is that the only thing I'm doing wrong? If it is, then I just need to get a good lemon cookie cutter-friendly recipe!
