I am a meat eater, love the smell of a good steak sizzeling on the grill browing in the pan. The other day I bought 4 well marbled NY Strip steaks. Not dry aged that I am aware of. It came from one of those big box warehouse stores that starts with a C.
Once I started to sear it, the smell seemed kind of off almost gamey. I thought it was in my head until my other guest said the same thing. We ate about half and tossed it out. It was eatable, not sour or bitter just kind of funky smelling and ok tasting.
What would cause this weird smell, almost gamey sort of beefy?
The only thing I did differently was sear the edge of the meat where the fat strip is for one of my guests. Could that have been what people responded to?
