Bad Meal @ Tommy's

S/O and I went to Tommy's last night for a special night out. Have been in the past and loved it, but last night was less than spectacular.

The way I figure it, when a restauraunt offers specials, they should be, well, special. Not so last night. Oysters en Brochette were overcooked oysters (hard) wrapped in crunchy (i.e. burned and not crispy) bacon with "meuniere" which was horribly broken and bland. Not a good start to the meal. S/O had Oysters Tommy which were OK, but not nearly as gooey & cheesy as I remember in the past.

I should have known better than to order a special salad when the featured greens were iceberg (and no, it wasn't a wedge), but my mind was clouded by promises of jumbo lump crabmeat, shrimp and creole mustard vinaigrette. I figured I could overlook the iceberg if I had those three things going for me, at least iceberg is nice and crisp. Well, it should be crisp, and it should definitely not be warm and soggy, but that's what happens when it was dressed around noon and left to sit in a warm area of the kitchen (no other explanation for it). I voiced my displeasure with the waiter who had gone so far as to recommend it, but that didn't stop him from charging us the $16.00 for a "special salad." The only time I'm going to pay $16.00 for a salad is if it has foie gras and/or shaved truffles on top, so his tip suffered.

I got the duck which in and of itself was fabulous (as always), but everything else on the plate was horrible. Wild rice was salty to the point of being inedible, sweet potato "hay" was cold and tasted stale. The soft shell crab was horribly fishy.

The Tiramisu was serviceable, but as far as I'm concerned coffee - and not chocolate - should be the dominant flavor in a Tiramisu. Not so with this one which had as much chocolate as a hot fudge sundae drizzled over it.

I'd love to say I'll be going back to give it another chance, but I don't think so.
