Bad experience at Arunee Thai

Mary | Jan 26, 2006 08:38 AM

For several years now Arunee Thai has been my favorite restaurant. I loved it not only for the food, but for the consistently good service: always polite, helpful, smiling and downright nice waiters and waitresses.

No longer.

I hadn't been to Arunee Thai for a couple of months when I decided go on Tuesday, Jan. 23. I and a friend got there at 1 p.m. For the first time ever at Arunee there was fairly loud music playing (they sometimes had very soft background music, but always unobstrusive). It is a very small place and the music was really annoying.

I asked the waitress to please turn it down. She turned it down imperceptibly. I asked the waiter, whom I had never seen before at the place. He responded with an attitude worthy of those overpriced Soho places. Other people wanted to listen the music (nobody seemed to be listening), he didn't have to comply, who did I think I was, etc. In fact, he was downright bitchy and so completely unlike anything I had ever experienced at Arunee Thai that for a couple of seconds I just gaped at him.

I asked to speak to a manager. No manager. I asked for the owner's telephone number. Mr. Soho Attitude in Queens gave a number. I called twice and left an urgent message on an answering machine. To this day I have yet to receive a reply. Soho Attitude contined to flounce around, casting dark glances at us. We walked out without ordering anything.

I will not be going back to Arunee Thai. It is no longer a pleasant, welcoming place.

Anybody have any suggestions about great Thai restaurants that can take its place?
