Bacon & Eggs @ Ann's Coffee Shop, Menlo Park

No one was more shocked than I to be awake and rarin' to go at 5:30 in the morning. Hungry too, so I thought this was a good chance to try Ann's for breakfast. I got there at 6:30am and there were already enough customers to have two waitresses and at least two cooks in the back.

I had read about the old-fashioned hash browns with the square of American cheese on top, and was disappointed when mine came out unadorned. My waitress said you had to ask for it, so I did. Theh American cheese melted before my eyes on the hot-off-the-grill hash browns. I really liked them that way. The creaminess filled in the edges and rounded out the golden brown crunch of the freshly made potatoes.

The bacon was as good as I'd heard too. Not artisanal bacon, but cooked right with a solid crispness and nicely rendered. These were well-drained of grease, pressed flat, and not tough. Eggs were truly over-easy and carefully handled too. My rye toast was fine but that the butter didn't melt on them.

All in all, a solid effort working with commercial grade ingredients prepared well. My breakfast was $9 including tax and tip. Cash only.
