Backhouse in NOTL -- Alo without the two-month wait?

jjmellon | Aug 5, 201608:41 AM     6

I had the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings ($89 + $49) at Backhouse this week, and left feeling just about as happy with the experience as I was after visiting Alo a few months ago.

Backhouse is all about Niagara flavours, and right now almost every fruit, vegetable, protein and wine they serve is local. The service was both professional and knowledgeable. Each of the 10 or so courses was interesting to look at, to hear about, and to taste. The two "main" courses were poached trout, and 55-day dry aged beef. The Niagara wine pairings for each course were well chosen -- it was almost like getting a winery tour.

Unlike Alo, there are briefer tasting menus available for $49 and $69, each with optional wine pairings, as well as an a la carte menu. Even with the long drive, I think I will likely return to Backhouse before I get in the reservation queue again for Alo.
