Ellen and I spent the weekend in Maybrook, a little
town about 11 miles west of Newburgh on NYS Rte. 17K.
(BTW, I've always found New York's system of highway
numbering -- or lack thereof -- confusing; anyone know
if there's a method to the madness?)
Anyways, Maybrook seems to be devoid of exciting
culinary doings; but a short drive away is Montgomery,
which features a good cafe/bakery and an excellent
Northern Italian restaurant. The cafe is The Daily
Bean; try their scones and I think you will be happy.
The restaurant is 88 Charles Street.
It's hard to give recommendations of what to order
because everything we ate there was delicious. If you
get the Caesar salad they prepare the dressing at your
table, adding a bit of theatrics to a wonderful salad.
The service was kind of harried on Saturday night, and
we had to wait too long for a table; I'm prepared to
put that off to the fact that a hurricane had come
through the area on Thursday; a lot of people had no
electricity which I'm sure meant more people were
eating out than normal for this time of year. When we
went back on Sunday, there was no wait and the staff
was very gracious.
Other notes: They only take reservations for parties of
5 or more. They don't accept credit cards.
