On the advice of a fellow chowhound, we drove the 24 miles south from Ft. Pierce to Hobe Sound to try out Austins Smokehouse in Hobe Sound. As foodies and BBQ aficionados, we really liked what they're serving at Austins. We had a sampler platter and an order of St. Louis Style Spare Ribs. The sampler platter had pork, brisket and we chose sweet marinade ribs. The St. Louis Style Spare Ribs we ordered were of the dry rub type.
Overall, the meats were smoked to perfection. Tasty, delectable. The only thing that baffled us was the fact that the spare ribs didn't have the plasticy skin removed from the back side of the ribs and that's basic BBQ 101. This practice that takes just seconds is important because it allows both sides of the rack to be properly seasoned and the plasticy skin isn't that appetizing. Otherwise, these ribs were good as was the brisket and pulled pork.
The sides we ordered were the Cowboy Baked Beans, Green Beans, Sweet Cole Slaw and Macaroni Salad. All the sides were tasty, especially the Cowboy Baked Beans which were the best of the sides ordered. We also received cornbread with our meal and while not spectacular was reasonably good.
Austins isn't very big, it's homey, the service was good and the meat was all smoked to BBQ perfection. The only rock to throw at Austins are the prices in relataion to the portions. We own a busy catering company, we've eaten at top BBQ joints from coast-to-coast and generally know what to expect for our money. Austins is pricey and for $12 to $15 you should be expecting about 1.5 pounds of meat and the sides and the portions there were also skimpy. The sides were especially small and about the size of something you would expect from a drive-thru, fast-food restaurant. We read other reviews about Austins and they were spot-on with our assessments in that the food was quite good, but not nearly enough of it for the money.
We both agreed that we wouldn't make the drive that far just for Austins again but if we're down that way we would stop in. Very good food overall but not much value for your hard-earned money.
