I hit Sushi Niichi for lunch the other day. It's right next to Momoko, the bubble tea place on 24th street. I love this little place - I found it to be cheerful, affordable, and good. I'm so excited - this place fills the UT area sushi/japanese gap left when Banzai closed years ago. And they actually have quite a bit more on the menu.
I got a lunch special - a tuna roll, large miso soup, and a pretty big salad with delicious dressing on it for 7 dollars and something. This made me happy! I work at UT and have missed having easy access to a healthy sushi lunch since Banzai closed on the drag.
The decor is simple and soothing - blonde wood and room dividers, and full of natural light. The service was sincere and attentive. That day, it seemed to be a one-woman operation - a lady who sat me, waited on me, and I believe made all the food herself. Therefore, perhaps try it out one time when you're not in a big hurry. I did get back to my office in an hour (but I was one of the only customers that day).
The soup was excellent, full of garnish and tofu, and the salad was very fresh and tasty. You can also get it without the salad for 5.95 (again, a nice inexpensive sushi lunch like the good old days of the old Banzai). The tuna roll I had was quite good also.
Perhaps just because the students were gone for summer, business was VERY slow. We need to keep this place!! I looked on citysearch, and the people who posted on there said it was "the best sushi in Austin", hands-down, better than musashino, etc. That's quite a statement, though I haven't tried enough of the sushi to say yet.
They also have ramen, Udon, salmon over rice, and other bento box type lunches. All the lunch prices are very reasonable, with the ramen coming in under $5, and the dinner menu has dinner specials for around $7.
Hooray for Sushi Niichi!!!
I hope to go back very soon.
one thing - they're closed on Tuesdays right now.
