Aubergine to close permanently - kind of

Sorry if this is a re-post (I searched but didn't see it), but it's now official that Aubergine in Newport Beach has been sold by Tim and Liza Goodell. According to the LA Times (Food section, 7/19/05, the restaurant and the name have been sold. They're keeping the wine. They are continuing plans to expand their restaurant empire in LA and on to San Diego. Personally, I find this a little sad, having enjoyed some very nice meal experiences at Aubergine and then Troquet, back in the day, when these were the only two restaurants the Goodells owned and Liza was actually running the front room and Tim was running the kitchen.

I guess I'm just old-fashioned but I really appreciate the more hands-on, personal style restaurants and restaurateurs, where the owner is right there, to make sure that things are done right. Oh well...
