atlaxico mexican on astoria blvd: at least passable

babar ganesh | Apr 16, 2006 10:16 PM

grabbed a chicken huarache from atlaxico mexican restaurant today (astoria blvd and 21st street). went with low expectations given my experience with mexican restaurants in that part of astoria.

i had to wait a bit for my order because a large table had arrived just before me, so i got to see a lot of orders coming from the kitchen -- everything was individually prepared to order and looked good. second, the huarache was actually pretty good. if you don't know, a huarache is like a taco but it has a thicker tortilla which is oblong in shape so it wraps up more like a sandwich. the tortilla was made fresh though from packaged corn meal (maseca) and tasted quite good. the chicken itself was unremarkable but not bad. i usually order other meats anyway.

anyway, they're a block away from me so i'll be back to try more -- i will keep y'all posted. decent mexican would be a blessing here.

it's cantina atmosphere (loud jukebox).
