Asparagus at bargain prices

Twice within the past six weeks or so, my local supermarket (an A&P), has had asparagus at $1.49/lb. Pretty reasonable, I'd say, since this is certainly not the season. Their latest circular offers it next week at $0.99/lb.

What's going on? Where's this stuff coming from? The quality appears to be good, although I'm no expert on asparagus. How long can this go on? Is there a permanent supply of out-of-season, lower priced asparagus? Are others seeing this where they live? I'm not complaining, just curious.
