Asian chili paste

Magycmyste | Apr 7, 201411:53 AM     37

So, I went to a teppanyaki restaurant recently, and when I asked for a little extra something to spice up my meal, the chef gave me some chili paste that was absolutely delicious! I'd love to have some at home, but I'm not sure if this is something I can buy or I need to make at home. When I look for chili paste at the store, I see jars of sambal oelek that look more the consistency of a sauce. This paste was very smooth, like tomato paste (or South Indian thokku). If I were to guess, I think it's ground up red chilis, garlic, and oil. Can anyone tell me if there's a specific name for this paste?
