Asheville, NC on a budget

I am a poor stage actor who loves to travel. I like to get a feel for the local beauty and artistry of a place, but I do everything on the cheap. I stay in hostels, for example. I am from Seattle, and I have found dozens of places there that can serve up an inspired meal for about $10. Often the cheap eats places tend to be gourmet-ish sandwich joints or ethnic restaurants, but they run a broad spectrum. Often they will not have waitservice - a good sign of a cheap eats place. By the way, I do not particularly like burgers unless they are out of this world. In short, I have foodie tastes (I really go for creative food) but a college student's budget.

That said, some of the things I have read so far on this board give me hope that my upcoming trip to Ashville will be a really good one. Here are some of the restaurants that have been mentioned (the stars(*) indicate they have been repeatedly recommended in the last several months):

12 Bones on the River
Tupleo Honey*
Early Girl
Left Bank
Spirits on the River
La Paz
Bistro 1896
Flying Frog
Sunny Point*
Tomato Cucina Latino
Early Girl*
Laughing Seed
Coffey's (in Boone)
Wildflower (in Boone)
Morel's (in Banner Elk)

I'm sure more have been mentioned. I only read posts for a few months back. It does not seem that any of the posts have noted the price points though. You Asheville crew seem really knowlegeable. What would be your top 5 if you had to keep your meals to about $10 a head?

By the way, I am accompanying my brother on a college trip to Davidson and Furman (in Greenville, SC), so if you had any can't miss places in the Charlotte area or any town I might pass through, I would really appreciate it.
