Anyone who's been to Zen for sushi has driven past this restaurant, which is on the south side of Eglinton west of Birchmount, directly in front of the Metro East Detention Centre (handy if you're visiting someone). Arkadia House has been there for well over twenty years, yet a search shows it has only ever been mentioned on this site once.
I've eaten at Arkadia House a dozen times over the years with my parents and children, but never since we moved out of Scarborough seven years ago. Last Saturday we went back for the first time. Everything was exactly the same --- the waiters, the decor, the menu, the food, even the prices (OK, they're a tiny bit higher). In this case, staying the same is a very good thing.
The restaurant is in a standalone building with its own parking lot. It is quite large, and I would guess it seats150. It was about 40% full when we were there. It also does a significant takeout business.
Everyone starts with the free basket of garlic bread and the free appetizer plate of black olives, sliced dill pickles and hummus. The hot appetizer platter is worth sharing for grilled octopus, grilled calamari, stuffed vine leaves and spanakopita. There is a very large selection of Greek main courses, both meat and fish. Notable at $17 is the mixed grill, which includes chicken and pork souvlaki, a grilled butterflied quail and two lamb chops, with roast potatoes and fresh vegetables. Keep in mind that whatever you order, it will be too much food.
I think Arkadia House beats many of the Greek places on the Danforth in quality and value. I don't know if it's worth a special trip, but we are glad we made one.
