Thanks to Foodwisperer, EllenR, Ttrockwood, and others (?) for championing this really fine place. Their breads are excellent, on the level of Runner and Stone, I`ll single out miche and baguette for praise. Pastries - croissant appreciation is a touchy subject so I`ll say their plain is my favorite in the city. Pineapple upside down and lemon sugar brioche strip are other winners. The Babka, not as flakey as most babkas of the world, is as good as the hounds kvell over. For me the hazelnut chocolate pastry and maybe one or two others would be better if less rich.
A decent into New York sectarian strife - Pizza. Arcades', if kind particular, is so spectacular that it merits a trip here for the intense pleasure you will get. Theirs is in the Motorino Kreste mode, but the sauce and cheese are scant and the under crust is amazingly crisp and full of flavor while the puffy sides are wonderfully soft with a great touch of yeast. Put it all together and you get a pizza that while of a defined style, is damn near unique. Again the toppings are really really light.
