We have been a fan of Aquitaine SouthEnd for years, but mostly for dinner. Months ago, we went to Dedham for lunch and the french onion and steak frittes were dead on wonderful, as was the service.
Talk about a trainwreck!!!
A celebratory brunch this weekend - not so much. Our waiter was thoroughly incompetent but completely sweet and gracious. His mama trained him well, Aquitaine however did not train him at all. He clearly wanted to do a good job, and we coached him thru, yes we would like coffee, yes we would like plates with the shared app, yes we need a serving spoon, yes all our water glasses are empty, yes the sweet rolls never arrived, yes you screwed up an order. But he was sweet as were the other servers that arrived with plates of food - but so thoroughly untrained.
And the food. Those sweet rolls were dismal. My Basque omelette was lower then airplane bfast food.It sure read well on the menu. After quite awhile we had to nearly beg for our half eaten plates to be taken away.
It was as if the whole staff was on a thorzine drip. It was likely some of the worst brunch food I have ever encountered. The coffee was good. Our main waiter tried. But in the world of restaurants, when you are starting out, you are only as good as those who train you. I hope our waiter leaves and finds proper training. He was sweet. But if you are not going to train you staff, at least give a celebratory party of 8 a professional manager to oversee that things go well. They really couldn't have gone worse.
