Hey, only three more weeks of summer and the cool
temps today have put me in the mind of autumn.
Fall foliage, pumpkins, and APPLES!
Every year we make a trip upstate to Klaverak NY
to the Philips Orchard for apple picking, usually on
Columbus Day weekend. In my book, ripe, crisp,
tart apples off the tree can't be beat.
Then, we head a little further north to a farm stand
called Golden Harvest (I think), for what to me are
the supreme of all time, apple cider donuts. Cake
donuts, with lots of cinamon sugar on them. When
they are hot and fresh from oil, they are like food
from heaven. Let them cool and they lose most of
their appeal, but can suffice when re-warmed
in a hot oven, never the microwave.
I'm a tad concerned about the fresh cider this year
what with the bacteria scares running around, but
I'll still go for a gallon or two.
Jericho Cider Mill on LI ain't bad, but you can't beat
upstate NY for apples. Don't waste your time
on LI or NJ, well maybe in NW NJ in the mountains
could be ok.
Bring on the apples and allergies be damned.
