Apna Bazaar, Cotati– Halal butcher and Pak/Indian grocer

Melanie Wong | Aug 14, 200411:12 PM

Detouring to get away from the back-up on 101 today, I spotted the sign for a Pakistani and Indian grocery store along the frontage road on the northside of Cotati and made a U-turn to check it out. It’s not that big, about the size of a convenience store, but has a pretty good assortment of packaged foods, snacks and spices. There was a tray of freshly made pakoras on the front counter. The refrigerator case stocks fresh curry leaves, chilis, and turmeric root. The real find though was a fresh meat counter stocked with halal lamb, goat and chicken, as many small stores only have frozen. A big tray of pink, plump goat brains looked so fresh, they almost seemed like they were still throbbing. The proprietor said that the new stocks are delivered on Thursdays and Fridays for the best selection, and that most of the meat will be sold by the end of the day on Saturday.
