I'm a San Francisco native visiting Manhattan and I just had a meal at Cafe Boulud, largely based on this site's recommendations and I just got to say that I was really dissapointed.
Here's how my it went.
Reservation: I got a 6pm Friday reservation the day of. Too easy! That should have been the first warning sign...
Meal: My girlfriend and I got the 5 course tasting menu. I won't rehash every plate here, but I will say that aside from a couple gems, most of the dished were uninspired. In my opinion, a French chef has truly failed when you eat a dish and thing to yourself, "This would have been better without this sauce." Also, I would say that many of the dishes were not prepared well.
Is this really the work of the 2005 James Beard Best Chef of New York award?? I know that he is leaving to start his own restaurant, perhaps he and and his crew had already left?
I gotta say I was dissapointed. I'm gonna be comming back again in a month, if this is supposed to be one of the better restaurants in NYC, I'll save my money and wait till I'm back in SF.
